Amputations are among the most severe and disabling workplace injuries that often result in permanent disability. These injuries result from the use and care of machines such as saws, presses, conveyors, and bending, rolling or shaping machines as well as from powered and non-powered hand tools, forklifts, doors, trash compactors and other equipment used for materials handling activities.
Anyone responsible for the operation, servicing and maintenance of machines and equipment — employers, employees, safety professionals and industrial hygienists—should read OSHA’s 60-page guide, Safeguarding Equipment and Protecting Employees from Amputations. Primary safeguarding, as outlined in this guide, includes control methods that protect employees from machine hazards through effective machine guarding techniques. In addition, a hazardous energy control (lockout/tagout) program needs to complement machine safeguarding methods in order to protect employees during potentially hazardous servicing and maintenance work activities.
The OSHA Training Institute Education Center is offering OSHA 2045-Machinery and Machine Guarding Standards at the following locations:
February 2-10, 2019 | Dublin, CA WEEKEND COURSE
April 15-18, 2019 | Fresno, CA
May 14-17, 2019 | Santa Rosa, CA
This 4 day course familiarizes the student with various types of common machinery and their related safety standards, and the control of hazardous energy sources (lockout/tagout). The course presents an approach to machinery inspection that enables participants to recognize hazards and to provide options to achieve abatement, including those for mechanical motions and actions created by points of operation and other machinery processes. Includes practice on identifying and mitigating machinery hazards.
