Upcoming Trench Safety Stand Down Helps Reinforce OSHA’s National Emphasis Program on Trenching and Excavation

The OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District urges participation in NUCA’s Trench Safety Stand Down on June 17-21, 2019.

DUBLIN, CALIF. (PRWEB) JUNE 06, 2019

The OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, the only OSHA authorized OTI Education Center headquartered in Northern California, is promoting the upcoming Trench Safety Stand Down, sponsored by the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA), in support of OSHA’s National Emphasis Program on Trenching and Excavation. Employers are encouraged to participate in the Trench Safety Stand Down by talking to their workers during the week of June 17-21, 2019, to reinforce the use of trench protective systems and help eliminate trenching and excavation hazards.

“NUCA’s Trench Safety Stand Down and OSHA’s National Emphasis Program on Trenching and Excavation share a common goal – encouraging employers to reverse a recent upsurge in preventable accidents by training their workers on current excavation requirements and safety procedures for working in trenches,” says Cari Elofson, Assistant Director of the OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District. “Both programs emphasize the need for employers to identify and reduce the hazards which are causing or likely to cause serious injuries and fatalities during trenching and excavation operations.”

Companies can participate in the Trench Safety Stand Down by taking a break during the workday to offer a toolbox talk or other safety activity to draw attention to specific hazards related to working in and around trenches and excavations. Employers are invited to provide feedback to NUCA following their trench safety activity; NUCA plans to publish a list of participating organizations and mail a Certificate of Participation. For more information visit the NUCA Trench Safety Stand Down website.

OSHA has compiled a variety of training and compliance assistance materials and resources on the Trenching and Excavation area of its website, including trenching and excavation publications, fact sheets, booklets, videos, QuickCards and much more. The OSHA Training Institute Education Center is supporting the Trench Safety Stand Down and OSHA’s National Emphasis Program by offering OSHA 3015-Excavation, Trenching, and Soil Mechanics, a 3 day course on OSHA standards and safety aspects of excavation and trenching, at several locations in 2019, including Reno, Nevada, and Dublin, San Luis Obispo and Sacramento, California.
