The National Safety Council Creates Opioids at Work Toolkit to Help Employers Reduce the Impact of Opioids in the Workplace
The OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District urges employers to address the opioid epidemic in their workplaces.
DUBLIN, CALIF. (PRWEB) OCTOBER 24, 2019
The OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, the only OSHA authorized OTI Education Center headquartered in Northern California, is highlighting the National Safety Council’s Opioids at Work Employer Toolkit to help employers address the impact of the opioid epidemic in their workplaces. The employer toolkit features sample policies, fact sheets, presentations, safety talks, posters, white papers, reports, videos and more, to guide employers in the implementation of workplace opioids programs.
“Employers across the US are being impacted by the opioid epidemic, and many are working to help reduce the negative effects of opioid abuse in their workplaces,” says Cari Elofson-Callahan, Assistant Director of the OSHA Training Institute Education Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District. “The Opioids at Work Employer Toolkit is designed to help employers understand how opioids impact the workplace, recognize signs of impairment, educate employees on the risks of opioid use, develop drug-related HR policies and support employees who are struggling with opioid misuse.”
The Opioids at Work Employer Toolkit is organized into several key subject matter areas, including the Basics, Human Resources, Safety Professionals, Supervisors, Employee Education and Other Resources. Each subject matter area features links to a variety of topics. For example, topics under the Basics include Opioids in the Workplace, Understanding Treatment and Recovery, How Opioids Impact Employees’ Safety and Your Bottom Line, Month-by-Month Implementation Plan and Building a Recovery-Friendly Workplace.
The structure of the Opioids at Work Employer Toolkit allows employers to address specific relevant topics or develop a comprehensive program, depending on the needs and internal capacity of each organization. Regardless of approach, the National Safety Council strongly recommends that the entire organization, including management, marketing and communications, human resources, environmental health and safety, legal and frontline workers, is represented from the onset to ensure buy-in and enhance the effectiveness of the program.
