OTC 204 – 40-Hour HAZWOPER

Course Description

Welcome to the 40-Hour HAZWOPER course, a dynamic and hands-on training program tailored to enhance safety and operational readiness among professionals dealing with chemical hazards and hazardous wastes. This course is about doing. You’ll engage in extensive hands-on activities that simulate real-world scenarios, ensuring that your training is intensely practical. 

What to Expect 

This course is structured around active, participatory learning. You will dive into both written materials and practical exercises that cover various aspects of hazardous waste operations and emergency response (HAZWOPER). Our focus is on real-life application, making sure you gain practical skills and confidence to handle hazardous materials safely in industrial and field environments. 

Course Requirements 

Participants are required to bring their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to fully engage in the training activities. Please ensure you come prepared with: 

  • Safety glasses 
  • Hard hat 
  • Work gloves 
  • High-visibility vest (if available) 
  • Personal respirators: If you plan on participating in full dress exercises and drills, bring your assigned half or full-face respirator. This would also include your self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), if available. A proof of occupational respiratory protection medical clearance* must be provided. 
  • Optional: A change of clothing and plenty of drinking water in sealed, single-use containers are strongly encouraged for comfort and hydration during physical activities. 

Completing this course will satisfy OSHA requirements for training under standards OSHA (1910.120) and (1926.65), equipping you with the knowledge and skills to engage in hazardous waste operations that could expose you to hazardous substances, safety, or health hazards.

* Medical eligibility is to be determined by a physician or other licensed health care professional (referred to as a “PLHCP”). See Appendix C to 29 CFR 1910.134 or T8 CCR Section 5144 OSHA Respirator Medical Evaluation Questionnaire.
