The OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District wants to remind and encourage construction industry employers and workers to participate in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s National Safety Stand-Down from June 2-6, 2014, to raise awareness about the hazards of falls.

Companies can conduct a Safety Stand-Down by taking a break to have a toolbox talk or another safety activity, such as conducting safety equipment inspections, developing rescue plans, or discussing job specific hazards.  A Safety Stand-Down should provide an opportunity for employers and workers to talk about hazards, protective methods, and the company’s safety policies, goals and expectations.  Managers are encouraged to plan a stand-down that works best for their workplace.

Companies outside the construction industry are also encouraged to take part in the Safety Stand-Down.  Any organization with employees who are exposed to fall hazards can participate.  According to the 2012 Bureau of Labor Statistics data, falls (to a lower level) are a leading cause of fatalities in both construction and other industries, with 279 and 570 fatalities respectively.

Following their participation in the Safety Stand-Down, employers will have the opportunity from June 2 to July 15, 2014, to download OSHA Certificates of Participation here, provide feedback on their fall prevention activities, and offer suggestions on how OSHA can improve future safety initiatives.

If companies miss the opportunity to participate in the Safety Stand-Down during the official week of June 2-6, 2014, toolbox talks or other safety activities on fall protection or any safety topic applicable to the worksite should be conducted throughout the year to reinforce for employees the importance of hazard awareness and safe work practices.

The OSHA Training Center is offering the following fall prevention courses at locations throughout California, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada:

OSHA #7405 – Fall Hazard Awareness for the Construction Industry

OSHA #3115 – Fall Protection
