The OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, the only authorized OSHA Training Institute Education Center headquartered in Northern California, is highlighting an important U.S. Department of Labor resource for hurricane recovery assistance. The Department of Labor’s Hurricane Recovery Assistance webpage features a wide array of hurricane recovery resources, including information on organizations offering financial assistance, cleanup and recovery support from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and essential overviews and guidelines on natural disaster recovery.
“The recovery from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma is going to be long and arduous,” says Cari Elofson, Assistant Director of the OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District. “It’s important that those affected by these disastrous storms as well as those providing recovery assistance have access to a wide variety of resources and information available to support their efforts.”
The Department of Labor website offers helpful links and information on workplace safety, income and job assistance, including disaster unemployment assistance, national dislocated worker grants, retirement and healthcare plan guidance for employers and employees, assistance with claims for injured workers, assistance for veterans and guidance for federal contractors. The website also provides a number of OSHA fact sheets on key safety issues related to natural disaster recovery, including cleanup hazards, flood cleanup, downed electrical wires, fungi, falls, chainsaws and tree trimming.
Key government agency websites involved in disaster relief and recovery are also listed, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA); USA.gov, a one-stop page for hurricane-related information from federal agencies; Disaster Assistance Improvement Program (DAIP), which provides a mechanism to access and apply for disaster assistance through the collaborative efforts of federal, state, tribal, local and nonprofit partners; and Benefits.gov, which provides easy, online access to over 1,000 government benefit and assistance programs from 17 partner agencies.
