Supervisors play a key role in creating a safe work environment on construction jobsites. As on-the-job representatives of management, their responsibilities include:
- Role modelling and inspiring safe worksite behavior
- Providing workers with appropriate safety training
- Assessing the work environment for potential safety hazards
- Conducting accident investigations
- Helping to ensure that their company is complying with Federal and State OSHA regulations
In order for supervisors or workers designated by management with responsibility for others’ safety to be effective in their role, it is important that they receive training in the recognition, avoidance, abatement and prevention of safety and health hazards workers may face on construction worksites. Supervisors and other workers with safety responsibility who are trained in hazard recognition and prevention can help support construction companies’ legal and ethical obligation to keep their construction jobsites safe, healthy and accident-free.
OSHA #510 OSHA Standards for the Construction Industry can provide supervisors and other employees with a solid foundation in the use of Federal OSHA Construction Standards and regulations to supplement an ongoing safety and health program.
