Protect workers in trenches imageOSHA is promoting a Trench Safety Stand Down sponsored by the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) in support of its National Emphasis Program on Trenching and Excavation. The Trench Safety Stand Down, which takes place the week of June 17-21, 2019, encourages employers to talk to their workers about trench and excavation hazards to reinforce the use of trench protective systems to eliminate hazards.

NUCA hopes to reach many employers and employees who work in and around trenches and excavations to provide information about current excavation requirements and safety procedures for working in trenches. The primary goal of the Trench Safety Stand Down is to reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries that occur each year in the utilities industry, and to make others, such as municipal and industry workers who are also exposed, aware of these serious hazards.

Companies can conduct a Trench Safety Stand Down by taking a break during the workday to offer a toolbox talk or other safety activity to draw attention to specific hazards related to working in and around trenches and excavations. For more information on how to participate in this event, see Preparing for the TSSD.

After you have held a Trench Safety Stand Down event, you can provide feedback to NUCA using this TSSD Completion Form. NUCA will collect the information, publish the list of participating organizations on the NUCA website and in printed publications and mail a Certificate of Participation to all participating companies. For more information visit the NUCA Trench Safety Stand Down website or email [email protected].
